Reading speed and speaking time
Reading time is calculated at 238 words per minute, the measured average for adult silent reading in English. Speaking time uses 150 words per minute, which is the typical pace for presentations and public speaking. Audiobook narration tends to sit around 130–160 wpm depending on the genre.
If you're preparing a speech or presentation: 1 minute ≈ 150 words, 5 minutes ≈ 750 words, 10 minutes ≈ 1,500 words, 20 minutes ≈ 3,000 words.
How we count
Words: Any sequence of non-whitespace characters separated by spaces or line breaks. Hyphenated phrases like "well-known" count as one word. Numbers and abbreviations count as words.
Sentences: Text ending with a period, question mark, or exclamation mark. Bullet points and list items without punctuation are each counted as a sentence for readability purposes.
Reading level: Calculated using the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level formula, which measures average sentence length and syllables per word. A score of "Grade 8" means an average 13-year-old could understand the text on first reading. Most popular web content scores between Grade 6 and Grade 9.
Keyword density: The percentage of times a word appears relative to total word count. Common stop words (the, a, and, is, etc.) are excluded. A density above 3% may indicate overuse of a term.
