How the unscrambler finds words
When you type letters into the box, the tool checks every subset of those letters against a dictionary of 267,751 words, from two-letter words right up to using all of them. With seven letters that's thousands of arrangements to test. It stays fast because the whole word list sits in your browser after the first visit, so there's no network call on each search.
Results come back grouped by length with the longest first, which is usually what you want in Scrabble. Switch the sort to points and the highest-scoring words jump to the top instead. Tap any word and you'll see its Scrabble score, its Words With Friends score, and a definition pulled in on the spot.
SOWPODS or TWL?
SOWPODS is the international tournament list, used everywhere outside North America, and it's the default here because it gives you the most options. TWL is the US and Canada list. It's smaller and drops some British spellings and slang. Words like QI, ZA and JO count in both, but SOWPODS allows extras such as EUOI and THAE that TWL won't. If you're on Words With Friends, its own list sits closer to TWL, so switch over for a tighter match.
Getting more from blank tiles
Type ? in place of each blank and the tool tries all 26 letters for you. One thing worth remembering: a blank scores zero, so a word built with one is worth less than the same word played with real tiles. The point values shown here account for that.
A few scoring habits worth keeping
- Short high-value words often beat long common ones. QI is worth 11 points, EATING only 7.
- Learn the two-letter words. There are 127 in SOWPODS and they let you score in two directions at once.
- Flip to the points sort when you care about the score more than the length.
- Use the contains filter to build onto a letter already on the board.

The full SOWPODS list, 267,751 words. That covers everything legal in international Scrabble, most of Words With Friends, and the usual mobile word games.
Is there a catch or a sign-up?
No. It's free, there's no account, and there's no cap on how many searches you run.
Can I use it for Wordle?
Yes. Enter the letters you know and use the starts-with and contains filters to narrow things down. For position-aware help, the Wordle solver does it better.
